Cambridge, MA, October 4, 2022 –According to the Wall Street Journal, many employers are starting to shrink the maternity and paternity leave benefits. The Journal reports a drop in employers offering additional maternity time off beyond that required by law from 53% in 2020 to 35% this year, according to data from the Society of Human Resource Management, a trade association for HR professionals. The reasons behind the adjustment are many, but the most common ones are around preemptive economic measures in the event of a recession.

The paternity leave programs are also on the chopping block, with the percentage of employers offering paid time off dropping from 44% in 2020 to only 27% this year.

We are going against the grain at Modo and have increased our parental leave policies. Modo’s 12-week paid leave policy is a parental policy, which includes any person becoming a parent following a child’s birth, adoption, or foster care placement.
Most companies in states not mandated by law to offer parental leave only include maternal leave and exclude adoption and foster care. Modo believes that new parents should not be distracted by work or financial pressures in the first few weeks of their children’s lives. Studies have shown that the early bond between parents and children “reduces infant mortality, improves brain development, and lowers the chances of postpartum depression and anxiety among parents”.

So, why are we doing this? Because it’s not only the right thing to do for our employees, but it is also good for business. Here is why:

  • Parental leave policies increase employee retention and reduce turnover.
  • Women don’t have to sacrifice pay or careers to stay home with their children. They can keep their seniority level and return to work after a few months.
  • Having more women in the workplace helps increase diversity and inclusion initiatives. The lack of parental leave affects women of color and those with lower incomes the most.
  • It helps avoid stress and depression triggered by the loss of income coupled with the new responsibilities of a new child, thus severely impacting employees’ wellness.
  • A good parental leave policy is a great recruiting tool and can be a winning differentiator in the battle for talent.
  • Carrying about employees and their families proves the company is genuinely committed to the wellness of its employees and enforces the company’s values. This, in turn, increases employee morale, engagement, and productivity.

At Modo, we will continue to lead the transformation of the future of work and digital culture by example.
