The Best University Mobile Apps of 2019

In 2019, academic institutions from across the country continued to elevate the campus experience by introducing a host of mobile apps to help connect and engage audiences. We saw institutions of all types and sizes collaborate across departments to create apps that put the personalized resources students need to succeed within a finger click away.

As mobile continues to take hold as the medium of choice for students, parents, visitors and faculty, we see mobile strategies become more personalized, unified, and impactful. Today, campus apps are a fundamental resource used to drive recruitment, engagement, and student retention strategies.

At the third annual “Appademy Awards,” hosted at this year’s Kurogo Mobile Conference, we recognized leading edge university mobile apps across eight distinct categories. Read on to discover who was nominated, and find out who walked away with the top honors.

Without further ado, here are the best university mobile apps of 2019

Best Recruiting and Admissions

Recognizing apps that integrate modules, personas, tours, and/or other features for prospective students.

The nominees:

  • Bucknell University
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • Maine Maritime Academy
  • Indiana State University


The winner: Maine Maritime Academy
Maine Maritime Academy Mobile aims to provide a seamless transition from the admissions process into an intuitive and easy to follow navigation for everything a new student will need as they join the Maine Maritime Campus.

 

 

 

Best Special Purpose Module

Recognizing apps that utilize modules to highlight special programs, groups, resources, and more.

The nominees:

  • University of Findlay
  • Pepperdine University
  • California State University, Sacramento
  • Roosevelt University

The winner: California State University, Sacramento
Nearly 40% of students in the US report significant mental issues. Sacramento State is committed to helping their students in need and are leveraging Modo Campus to support student wellness.

 

 

 

Best Student Engagement App

Recognizing apps that engage students in unique and meaningful ways.

The nominees:

  • Illinois College
  • Northern Arizona University
  • Wentworth Institute of Technology

The winner: Northern Arizona University
Northern Arizona University created a resource that not only provides students with information about the campus, but keeps them engaged with it. Students have access join clubs and activities, sign up for notifications and intramural sports, find a job and complete a timesheet.

 

 

 

Most Innovative App for Communication

Recognizing apps that utilize personalized and timely push notifications and in-app banners to improve communication with students and/or various target audiences.

The nominees:

  • UCF
  • Cowley College
  • Harding University

The winner: University of Central Florida 
UCF is a power user of Modo’s Communicate Feature, with 12 Opt In Channels. Ryan Seilhamer, Program Director of Mobile Strategy, has used the delegation feature of Modo Campus to put the power of the tool in the hands of the content experts.

 

 

 

Best App for the Use of XModule

Recognizing apps that use XModule to deliver hyper-personalized and unique experiences to students on campus.

The nominees:

  • University of Houston
  • Oklahoma Christian University
  • Florida State University
  • Berkeley College
  • Northern Michigan University

The winner: Berkeley College
Berkeley College is heavily utilizing X-Module in both their App and Desktop experience. The “Commit to Graduate” section of their App utilizes XModule to guide the student through their path to graduation.

 

 

 

 

Best Student Developed App

Recognizing apps that empower students to become involved in the app development process, no matter one’s technical abilities.

The nominees:

  • University of California, Berkeley
  • Louisiana State University
  • University of Minnesota, Duluth

The winner: University of California, Berkeley
During development UC Berkeley had some internal hurdles to climb when looking at a Campus Wide solution. One such hurdle was a student developed App. They have worked to partner with their students who now inform some of the development in UC Berkeley Mobile App.

 

 

 

Best Use of New Student Orientation Module

Recognizing apps that engage students, faculty, staff, and visitors for new student orientation.

The nominees:

  • University of Notre Dame
  • Old Dominion University
  • New York University
  • University of Central Florida
  • North Carolina Central University

The winner: Old Dominion University
Old Dominion University used the NSO Starter Kit to increase student engagement by rolling out content that aligns with the student lifecycle at ODU. They engaged students during the Week of Welcome, Homecoming, Open House, & Admitted Student Day.

 

 

 

Best Overall App

Recognizing the best apps of the year. 

The nominees:

  • Berkeley College
  • Florida State University
  • Cowley College
  • University of Houston

The winner: University of Houston

The app, UH Go Mobile, is an essential resource with modules for maps, calendars, dining, academics, mobile resources, admissions, and sustainability–just to name a few.

UH is the heaviest user of X-Module, and continues to add new XComponents and XModules regularly. With over 30 XModules / XComponents up and running, they are looking to utilize Modo Campus to the fullest extent of the platform.

 

Final Thoughts

Congratulations to all app nominees and winners. Across all categories, these top apps have improved student recruitment and engagement, putting students on a path for success. They’ve also inspired other institutions to explore the possibilities of mobile and push the limits of what’s possible for their own institutions.
